A Franklinton resident was killed shortly before 5 p.m. this afternoon after being involved in a single vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 10 in Washington Parish.

The driver was identified Saturday afternoon as 53-year-old Michael Meredith.

The crash occurred approximately five miles east of the Franklinton city limits.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as the victim was traveling east on La. 10 in a 1995 Ford pickup truck. Sgt. Nick Manale, spokesman for Louisiana State Police Troop L, said for unknown reasons the Ford pickup traveled off the right side of the paved roadway, and the driver overcorrected to the left and then back to the right, which caused the vehicle to overturn.

As the vehicle overturned the driver was partially ejected from the truck, causing fatal injuries.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, Manale said.

The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected at this time pending toxicology analysis, Manale added.

While the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge motorists to remain vigilant while behind the wheel and avoid distractions, especially the temptations of electronic devices.

Motorists who witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
