Franklinton coach pleased with scrimmage results

Franklinton traveled to Slidell to scrimmage the Tigers Thursday as preparations continue for the upcoming football season.

The teams began the scrimmage by running a pair of 10-play series with the first string.

Then each team ran four series before capping things with a 10-minute period.

Demon coach Shane Smith said they got out of the scrimmage what they wanted to.

“Our varsity 1s and 2s, JV (junior varsity) and freshmen got many reps, which is good to get on film,” Smith said. “They ran a downhill style of offense. We had the front. Our D-line did a good job. They busted a few, but overall, we did a good job.”

Martavius James put points on the board, returning an interception 60 yards for a touchdown.

Smith said offensively things were little frustrating because they had trouble getting the ball in the end zone and converting fourth-and-1s. He said they were 2-for-4 in that situation.

“We did run the ball well,” Smith said. “We drove the ball 80 yards in 2 minutes.”

Ron Robinson, the Demons’ new quarterback, ran for 136 yards and three touchdowns, including a 73-yard TD run.

Robinson also connected with Donovan Alonzo for a 72-yard touchdown pass.

Smith said his team did some good things and added the players were responsive to the adjustments.

He said every mistake they made is correctable.

“We’ll address it Monday,” Smith said. “The key is to make sure we don’t make those same mistakes.”

Franklinton takes to the road Friday for the Covington Jamboree, where the Demons will face the Mandeville Skippers.
