Bowling Green hits the road tonight for the Central Private Jamboree and battles Silliman Institute and Baton Rouge Homeschool.

The first game is against Silliman with kickoff set for 6 p.m. The next game against Baton Rouge is scheduled for 6:30.

After Bowling Green is done, the host school will play Silliman and then Baton Rouge.

Teams will play a pair of 10-minute halves. The clock will run until the two-minute mark. At that point, the clock will operate like it would in a regular game.

The Buccaneers are coming off a 4-6 record in 2012. They finished 2-3 in District 6AA play.

Carmon Moore, who enters his third year as Bowling Green’s coach, said they are using the jamboree as an opportunity to evaluate everyone.

“We’re moving people around to find different combinations,” Moore said. “We’re trying to win, but we’re trying to find out the best people in the best positions. We just want to put all of our players who can help us win in the right place.

“I don’t know anything about the Baton Rouge Homeschool team, so we’ll just wing that one. We know a lot about Silliman. The wet field is going to be an advantage for their line because they’re so big up front, but we have to learn to play in all situations and not look for excuses. Whatever situation it is that hurts us, we’ve got to learn to overcome it because that’s what good teams do.”

Moore said they are looking for consistency from everyone, and they want to limit the mental errors.

“We’re not going to try to do a lot so that the kids will be mentally sharp,” Moore said. “If you make mental errors against Silliman, because of their size and speed, it will hurt you.”

Connor McCain is the starting quarterback of Bowling Green’s power-I offense.

Hayden Thompson is Bowling Green’s running back. The other back is Elgin Austin, who also competes at linebacker. Austin is out for tonight’s game with a sprained ankle, but Moore said he should be back for the Buccaneers’ regular season opener next Friday on the road against Columbia Academy.

Bowling Green’s receivers are Patrick Roublow and K.J. Robertson, Sedale Peyton and Brady Goings.

The offensive line includes Colby Knight and Trevor May at guard with Coleman Knight and Drake Spears playing tackle and Matt Pierce at center.

Defensively, the Bucs run a 4-3.

The Knights handle the tackle positions with Hamp Roberson and Spencer Graves on the ends.

The linebackers are Trent Ball, Pierce and May.

The secondary players are corners Roublow and Roo Breland along with safeties Nick Casanova and Thompson.

Silliman enters this season after a postseason berth last year. The Wildcats reached the Class AA playoffs, where they suffered a 27-12 loss to Trinity Episcopal.

They finished with a 6-5 record.

T.J. Davis is in his ninth year at Silliman, his fourth as the head coach.

He said the jamboree gives them a chance to work on offense and defense.

“We’re in a situation where we can recover from last week,” Davis said. “Bowling Green was a lot more aggressive (in that scrimmage) than they were in the spring game.”

Zach Kelly is the quarterback with running backs Todd Micah Bourgeois and Marquell Smith.

The top wide receiver is Caleb Jackson, and Silliman’s top offensive linemen are John Gill, Jordan Talley and Jozie Milton.

Davis said his top corners are Tabary Cucullu and Collen McDowell.

Baton Rouge is in its second year of play. The Eagles are part of the Association of Christian Educators of Louisiana.

Last season they finished with a 3-5 record. Coach Jerald Hardy said the group Eagles return about 75 percent of last year’s team.

Baton Rouge’s offense operates out of the wing-T formation.

“With the wing-T we like to control the ball,” Hardy said. “We want to grind out first downs. We want to be efficient when we run the ball.”

Hardy said defensively they want to keep the scheme simple and allow the players to fly to the ball.

Baton Rouge has several players going both ways, as its roster consists of about 22 players and some are junior varsity.

Baton Rouge’s top players are Kirk Amos and Ian Woldt, who both play offensive and defensive line, and fullback Josh Arnold.
