Malcolm Lee Wascom, 93, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, at his residence in Mt. Hermon.

He was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Mt. Hermon. After attending Louisiana State University he joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served during World War II for 4 years. He was a POW for 42 months in the Japanese prison camps. He was released in 1945 and returned to the states, where he received a purple heart.

He began his dairying business and continued to be a successful dairy farmer until 1991. He was a pillar in the Mt. Hermon Community and was an active member and deacon at Bogue Chitto Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Mt. Hermon Ruritan Club. He also served on the Washington Parish School Board, was a member and board member of the LABC in Baton Rouge, and also served on the Board for Baton Rouge Production Credit Association. He was awarded Dairyman of the year in 1982.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carrie Schilling Wascom of Mt. Hermon; his children and spouses, Sandra Kay Rhorer of Baton Rouge, Shannon and Lewis Ray Powell and Malcolm “Mac” Wascom Jr., all of Franklinton and Sheila and David Alaniz of Columbiana, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and spouses, Kari and Mike Guedry, Kami Rhorer and James Shuckrow, Richard and Karen Powell, Darren and Amanda Powell, Robert and Dawn Powell, Michelle and Christopher Crawford, Amy Wascom, Andrew and Anna Alaniz, James Alaniz, and Adrianne and Jared Fincher; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewitt and Corien Burch Wascom; a son-in-law, Michael Rhorer; a grandson, Logan Hargis; and 11 siblings and spouses, Jewel Leo Wascom, Denver L. and Frankie Wascom, Eckel Wascom, Doyle D. and Ozzie Wascom, Cedric “Stumpy” and Willie Mae Wascom, B.M. and Lora Lee Wascom, Myrline W. and Losa Varnado, Dera W. and Sam Hart, and Donnie and Sandra Wascom; and infant twins, Shannon and Shirley Wascom.

Visitation was held Tuesday, May 21 at Crain Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at Bogue Chitto Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Jeremy Ingram and the Rev. Russell Kirkland officiating. Burial will follow in the Bogue Chitto Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are Vance Wascom, Jerry M. Wascom, Earl Wascom, John Douglas, Pat Williamson and Carlon Wascom. Honorary pallbearers are the Bogue Chitto Baptist Church Men’s Sunday School Class.
