Varnado eased past the Parkview Baptist Lady Eagles, 40-28, Thursday behind solid outings from freshman Tarralyn Moses with a game-high 12 points and 10 points from junior guard Erielle Stewart in the third annual Hannan Hustle Tournament at the Coquille Sports Complex.

The Kittens (3-10 after the game) only had six players score, but it was enough as they held off Parkview Baptist.

Varnado held a 10-8 first quarter advantage with Stewart scoring four of her 10 points and Tikandral Lewis netting four of her six points to pace the Lady Kittens to the early lead.

Parkview Baptist (9-4) only placed five players into the scoring list, led by Nicky Dawson and Shelby Tiede with seven points each followed by Skyler Goodwin and Leah Collins both with six points. The only other Lady Eagle to score was Morgan Douglas with a fourth-quarter basket.

Varnado took control of the game in the second period, outscoring Parkview Baptist 14-2 en route to a 24-10 halftime margin.

Moses turned it up in the second period, dropping eight points while connecting on three field goals and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. Stewart added two-second quarter baskets with Yienna Kemp netting a hoop.

Parkview Baptist worked itself back into the game, outscoring Varnado 10-3 in the third quarter on the strength of Collins’ three baskets to cut the Kittens’ lead to 27-20.

Varnado found some momentum and was able to turn the tide in the final quarter as the Kittens went to the free throw line 10 times, managing to hit five of them to remain in front. Moses and Yienna Kemp tallied four points each in the final period to help secure the victory.

Varnado assistant coach Mark Ross talked about the Kittens’ victory.

“We are coming back from a bit of a struggle with two injured players, including No. 15 (Stewart) recuperating from a torn ACL, and we are glad to have her back.” Ross said.

Varnado’s Moses did a good job pushing the ball, and Ross said she is a good young player.

“Tarralyn is very skilled inside the paint. She knows how to drive and gets a lot of point play from our fast breaks and stuff. We let her do that and play the position. She has to work a little harder defensively and has time to learn,” Ross added.

Moses said it was a big win for her team.

“We needed to get a win after having a tough season. I just did my best to make some good passes,” Moses said.
