A resident of Elm Drive in Bogalusa called police at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday to report that he’d shot someone who was trying to break into his house, according to Bogalusa Assistant Police Chief Rocky Gerald.

“When we got there he was laying on the front steps,” he said. “We called EMS, and they worked on him, but he died at the hospital.”

Clyde Adam Courtney, 39, of Bogalusa was reportedly shot once in the upper torso.

Gerald said officers took a statement from the man who said he was the intended break-in victim, gathered evidence and took photographs, and that the case remains under investigation. No charges have yet been filed.

“We’ll give it to the district attorney, and they’ll give it to the grand jury, who will decide if any charges will be filed,” he said. “They normally go along with the findings of the police.”

Gerald said Courtney did have a record of minor offenses with the Bogalusa Police Department.

Overall, the parish will operate on a budget of approximately $17.2 million.

The budget is available for viewing at the parish council’s office.
