The No. 13 seed Jennings Bulldogs forced three fourth-quarter turnovers as they were able to hold on for a win over the No. 20 seed Bogalusa Lumberjacks 21-14 in the bi-district round of the 3A playoffs.

Jennings now advances to the regional round hitting the road to take on the No. 4 seed Loranger Wolves who knocked off the No. 29 seed Kaplan Pirates.

The Bulldogs forced two interceptions and a fumble in the last quarter to seal the deal.

“Both teams were well coached and well prepared,” said Jennings coach Rusty Phelps. “Bogalusa has a very fine team and we were very fortunate to get out of here with a win. I’m real proud we were able to get those turnovers.”

Bulldog quarterback Jaylon Boutte had 11 carries for 68 yards and went 4-of-10 in the air for 61 yards.

Charlie Matte rushed for 96 yards on 24 carries while Jarquis Brown contributed 97 yards on 19 carries.

Bogalusa quarterback Brian Williams was 11-of-17 for 156 yards, two interceptions and a passing touchdown.

Donell Magee caught two passes for 57 yards and a touchdown while Trevonne Mingo grabbed four passes for 67 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter Bogalusa got things going when Magee caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Williams to make it 6-0 after a missed point after.

Jennings tied it up when Curtis Bell hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Boutte. Seth Cox booted the point after to go ahead 7-6.

But the Lumberjacks came roaring back,

Lumberjack defensive back Mingo picked off a pass in the end zone and ran it back 100 yards for the score to put Bogalusa up 14-7 at the half after a successful two-point conversion run by Cordero Brown.

As it turned out these would be the final points for Bogalusa thanks to the three turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Malik Williams had one of the interceptions with Brandon Hayes grabbing the other. Ian Ray recovered the third turnover on a Lumberjack fumble.

Jennings scored twice in the second half with the first scoring coming in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Brown and a four-yard run by Matte in the fourth quarter to take the 21-14 win.

“It’s hard to overcome turnovers when your opponent is a ball control team,” said Lumberjack coach Craig Jones. “We had a great season and I’m proud of our team. I would especially like to thank all of our supporters who made this a very successful season.”
