Washington Parish Solid Waste Supervisor Troy Barber hopes everybody has been saving, stashing and sorting recyclables in advance of the opening of the recycling program at the Choctaw Road Landfill on Monday.

Residents of Washington Parish can use the drive-through drop off at the landfill to recycle No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, paper and metal cans free of charge.

The plastics include water and soft drink bottles, peanut butter and jelly bottles, milk jugs, garbage bags, water pipe and more. Most plastics are marked on the bottom, with the number within a triangle of arrows.

Donors are asked to make sure the containers are free of food and labels, and that all items are separated prior to drop-off.

The hours of operation for recycling will be from 7 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Additionally, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday the landfill will accept Ewaste, such as computers, cell phones, copiers and monitors in celebration of national America Recycles Day.

Barber said televisions will not be accepted for recycling, but they can be disposed of in the landfill.
