Nelson Bateman Johnson, born Aug. 15, 1924, a lifelong resident of Angie, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 15, 2012, his 88th birthday.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1942, serving in WWII as a member of the 390th Bomb Group, completing 30 bombing missions over Germany, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Angie Baptist Church and owned Johnson’s Feed Mill until retiring in 2001. He was an avid sports enthusiast.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Katherine “Bobbie” Amrhein Johnson; four children, Kathy Johnson (Dan) Cuthbert of Baton Rouge, Mike (Lori) Johnson of Baton Rouge, Lynn Johnson of Oakland, Calif., Sarah Johnson (Charles) Pierce of Franklin, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Caitlin, Connor, Chandler, Payton and Parker Johnson and Michael and Katie Pierce; one sister, Rosemary Johnson (Esco) Knight of Bogalusa; and two sisters-in-law, Jo Ann Helm (Sid) Johnson of Bogalusa and Faye Doris Robbins (Billy) Johnson of New Orleans.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paris Johnson, and his mother, Mary Agnes Bateman Johnson of Angie, and two brothers, Paris William “Billy” Johnson of New Orleans and Sidney Ray Johnson of Bogalusa.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The service will follow visitation, officiated by Dr. Bryant Barnes.
