Qualifying for the Nov. 6 election started in Washington Parish Wednesday and will continue through the end of the workday Friday.

Besides recording their picks to fill the seat of president of the United States in November, voters in Angie, Franklinton and Varnado will elect mayors and members of the boards of aldermen. Those in Angie and Varnado will also pick chiefs of police.

As of around noon Thursday, 17 people had qualified for parish races. Eleven of them are incumbents, including all three mayors and the Varnado chief of police.

Those who had qualified for the mayors’ races at that point were: incumbent Wayne Fleming of Franklinton, a Democrat; incumbent John Dawsey of Angie, no party affiliation, and incumbent Paris C. Sumrall, of Varnado, no party affiliation. No one had yet qualified to run against any of the sitting mayors.

Nobody had qualified as a candidate for Angie chief of police, but incumbent Varnado police chief Louis Adams, no party affiliation, who had qualified, already had competition in Carl Fornea Jr., a Democrat, who had also signed on for the race for that position.

Those who qualified to run for seats on the Franklinton Board of Alderman were: Wayne Bryant, no party affiliation; incumbent T.J. Butler Jr., a Democrat; incumbent John L. Daniel, a Democrat; incumbent Richard Dillon, a Democrat; Jeremy Gueldner, a Democrat; incumbent Florence Manning, a Democrat; incumbent Brad Orman, a Democrat; and Heath W. Spears, a Republican.

Only incumbent Republican Roxie Fornea had qualified to run for a seat on the Angie Board of Aldermen.

Those who qualified to run for seats on the Varnado Board of Aldermen were: incumbent Jimmy Ezell, no party affiliation; Kimberly “Suzi” Kennedy, a Republican; and Joe T. Nichols, no party affiliation.

Potential candidates can qualify for the election at Washington Parish Clerk of Court Johnny D. Crain Jr.’s office in Franklinton through 5 p.m. today.
